A 9th grader of a family where arrests are an integral part of its being: his father served a total of three years in the occupation's prisons. His older brother is an injured ex-prisoner, and another brother was detained when the described events took place.
Every day, after finishing his homework, he went to work at Uncle Ra'ad's candy store, to help support the family. That is why they called him "Baklava candy".
According to his friends and his teachers, he was exceptionally sociable and well-liked. Kind of a leader. He loved to draw, sports and Dabke dance. Aspired to be an illustrator when he grow up. Loved open spaces (and lived in a crowded refugee camp, built on 1.5 square kilometers).
On January 16th in the morning, the army raided the camp, to arrest a wanted person and search the houses. The raid ignited clashes, and the soldiers fired the entire arsenal: live bullets, rubber bullets, stun grenades, teargas. Amro was shot in the head. He was rushed to a hospital in Beit Jala, where he was pronounced dead.
14 years old. The note in his pocket (the horrifying last will that Palestinian minors write) reads: "I wish people would wake up because we are under occupation. And I hope future generations will have freedom. Mom, I will take care of you, don't cry, please forgive me. Oh father, I wished for martyrdom and I got it."
Amro was the second victim killed in the camp in January, the second minor. The 14th killed in 16 bloody days.
