Amer Abu Zeitoun عامر ابو زيتون

16 years-old, from Balata Refugee Camp.

Amer had a role: he was the watcher. His duty was to expose invasion of undercover soldiers and warn the residents. He did so on January 5, early in the morning. He saw them in the alley, and sound the alarm. Clashes began.

The army was there to arrest persons of interest. The familiar ritual: going undercover, snipers on rooftops, siege of a house, reinforcements, confrontations.

Amer peeked out at the street when the clashes begun. He was unarmed. He was a watcher. Peeked out and shot in the head. The sniper continued to shoot even as he was falling, and hit him in his knees and his hands. It was 2 am. He was evacuated in a private vehicle (first responders were not allowed to approach) to Nablus Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 3:15 am. The persons of interest were captured.

In addition to Amer's death, three others were wounded. Amer was the fourth Palestinian killed in the first five days of 2023. Three of them were minors.
